Class V Stout - 8.5% ABV
"Not for the Timid"
River rapids are rated by a numeral system. Class V is the most difficult level rapid that can be negotiated.
This non-traditional beer is an Oatmeal Stout, Milk Stout and an Imperial Stout all in one. With a complex flavor profile ranging from coffee to chocolate, the sweetness is complemented with Chinook and Cascade hops to produce an extraordinary finish. But at 8.5% ABV, don't let the smooth taste fool you; this beer is like the Kern at high water - "Not for the Timid". |
In addition to our array of classic beers we like to spice up the taps with seasonal additions. Check back often to see what Kyle has created:
- XPA ($3.50/pint)
This extra-pale ale may be light in color, but it's full in taste. Green Bullet Hops from New Zealand provide the light citrus finish (42 IBU) and at only 4.2% ABV, this is a great session beer to enjoy with friends here at KRBC - Belgian Strong Ale ($4.00/Goblet (12)
This Belgian-Style ale is brewed with roasted corriander, belgian malts and belgian yeast. This strong ale is a legit 9% abv but it tastes so smooth you'll be wondering where the rest of the glass went. Enjoy! - 2nd Anniversary Ale - Belgian IPA ($4.00/pint)
This non-traditional hoppy belgian ale is a tribute to our second year in business. With an abv of around 9% and a nice hop finish, you'll wonder where that year went! - Strawberry Blonde ($3.50/pint)
Isabella Blonde's sassy sis, a sweet variation on our classic Blonde. Perfect for a summer day.
The Mill
Two-row malted barley and specialty malts are milled to crack the husk in preparation for the brewing process. Between 350-700 lbs of grain go into each of our batches, producing about 200 gallons of beer.
The Brewhouse
The milled grain is placed in the Mash Tun where hot water passes through, leaching out the starches into a liquid that is known as "wort". The wort is then transferred to the boil kettle where the starches are converted to sugars during the boil. Hops are added at different times during the boil to act as a bittering agent (to balance out the sweetness of the malt) or to add aroma. The brewing process takes 8-12 hours, depending on the type of beer we are making. Our brewhouse is a 7 bbl (beer barrel) system – 1 bbl is equivalent to 31 gallons or two standard ½ bbl kegs.
The Fermenters
The hot wort then passes through a heat exchanger to cool the liquid down to a temperature at which the yeast can be introduced. Yeast is a live organism that feeds on the sugars in the wort and produces alcohol and CO2 as a byproduct. You may notice hoses hanging off our fermenters into a bubbling bucket – this is the CO2 being released during the fermentation process. The temperature is closely controlled during this phase using a glycol chiller in order to maintain an optimal environment for the yeast. Beer is basically divided into two types based on the type of yeast used; Ales are produced by top fermenting yeast that typically do well at temperature ranges of about 60º to 75º f, while lagers are produced by bottom fermenting yeast that do best at cooler temperature ranges of about 45º to 60º f.
The Serving Tanks
Once fermented out, the beer (which is now alcoholic) is transferred into 7 bbl serving tanks in our walk-in cooler where we carbonate it. The serving tanks are maintained at a temperature of 38º f. The tap lines are hooked directly to these serving tanks with glycol wrapped tubing which maintains the 38º f temperature all the way to the glass – where you get to enjoy it!
